Western Cape storms displace hundreds in Breede Valley

Hundreds of people have been displaced in the Breede Valley municipal area in the Boland due to severe storms that have lashed the Western Cape since the weekend.

Affected families are being accommodated in five municipal halls.

Helicopters are expected to be deployed this morning to assist those communities at Rawsonville and the surrounding areas who are cut off by the floodwaters.

Breede Valley Deputy Mayor, Juben Von Willingh, says teams are working closely with disaster management officials and humanitarian organisations to assist residents affected by the severe weather conditions.

“So in terms of decisions taken in the JOC we have service providers who are giving three meals a day and then Gift of the Givers is also on board and the amount of people that I just mentioned that is the amount of people that are in our halls, but outside this halls we still have people that still also need aid you see earlier we went to De Wet where we assisted people who only slept on their roofs last night. So moving forward we in terms of aid, we need to provide daily food for our people so they can have food to eat.”
