11 suspects arrested in Meyerton for theft of fuel

Eleven suspects, aged between 27 and 46, have been arrested at a fuel plant in Meyerton in the Vaal in an operation by the Hawks and organised crime units for theft of fuel.

According to a SAPS statement, the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section members received intelligence about a robbery that was to occur in Meyerton at a fuel plant. The information was operationalised and the area was placed under surveillance.

During surveillance, two tankers were seen entering the premises which preliminary investigation found that it had been placed under administration.

Authorities say the group was intercepted before diesel could be moved from the site.

Two security guards are among those arrested and are alleged to have worked with the suspects.

“So the two security officials, they were working to guard that particular place. But from the information that we got, they are in cahoots with these nine other suspects who came to that premises. And out of that, there are foreign nationals that are involved and others which are the citizens of this country. So it’s a combination of different groups of people that are involved. But for now, we don’t have any information whether there are any police involved. So that is the matter that is under investigation,” explains Hawks national spokesperson, Christopher Singo.
