Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Babalwa Lobishe.
Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, Babalwa Lobishe, says residents are urged to continue using water sparingly so that they do not reach drought levels again.
The recent rainfall that hit parts of the Eastern Cape has brought much needed relief to drought stricken areas in the province. The dam levels in most of the municipalities in the province have reached full capacity.
Lobishe says the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro is one of the regions that was gravitating towards day zero.
“They are going to see and feel that the dam levels are high but remember our consumption has already been high and we still caution our people not to utalise more water unnecessarily. We urge them to be conservative because water is life, the more we have on our reserves the better.”
The combined dam levels supplying the Metro have risen from around 36% to above full capacity within days, with the Kouga and Churchill dam now overflowing. The Impofu Dam has also overflowed for the first time in years.
Residents say despite the damage caused by the floods, they are relieved to see dam levels recover.
