City Power appeals for information after guard killed in Denver

City Power has appealed to residents of Shalazile informal settlement in Denver, south of Johannesburg to assist police with information that could lead to the arrest of suspects behind the murder of a security guard killed while guarding the utility’s electricity infrastructure.

Security officer Thalasizwe Gasa was shot and killed by unknown suspects while on duty guarding the utility’s Shalazile Microgrid Plant a week ago. He was later found lying on a footpath between the shacks.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says the motive for the attack is still unknown, but it is believed the suspects may have targeted the microgrid infrastructure that supplies electricity to the community.

“This senseless and unnecessary loss of life comes at the time when City Power is going through some of the attacks from the communities were we operate and see increasingly our security officers, our technicians, contractors as well attacked, hijacked and taking their possessions by the very same community that we try to assist.”
