Inanda residents call for increased police visibility after shooting

The community of Bhambayi in Inanda, north of Durban, has called for police visibility to be stepped up after four people were shot and killed in the area just before midnight on Friday.

Community members say three suspected robbers, believed to be linked to the notorious West Gang, opened fire on a group of community patrollers, killing one of them at the scene.

Two others later succumbed to their injuries in hospital. One of the suspects was also killed during the exchange of gunfire.

Community member, Mdu Radebe, says residents are living under siege from criminals who target people in their homes, and has called for more support for community patrollers.

“The community is very worried because if these patrollers are getting killed, who will protect the community. The community needs more support from the South African Police Service. For example, when this incident happened, no police attended up until in the morning. Patrollers had to walk from Bhambayi to Vela Police Station three times to report about this matter. So, it is very worrying for the community, and the community needs each and every support, more especially from the premier’s office,” adds Radebe.
