NPA welcomes sentences handed to Mugabe, co-accused

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Gauteng has welcomed the sentences handed to Bellarmine Mugabe, son of the late former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe and his co-accused, Tobias Matonhodze.

The Alexandra Regional Court sentenced Mugabe to 24 months imprisonment or a R400 000 fine for pointing a toy firearm in a separate incident before the Hyde Park shooting in February.

He was handed another 18 months imprisonment or a R200 000 fine for being in the country illegally.

Meanwhile, Matonhodzhe, his cousin, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for attempted murder for the Hyde Park incident. He was further handed a total of three years’ jail time for three other charges.

Gauteng NPA Spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole says: “The NPA commends the successful prosecution of Bellarmine Mugabe and Tobias Mathonodze and the work of the prosecution team in securing these convictions and sentences. This outcome reflects the strength of the state’s case and its commitment to ensuring accountability through its prosecution. The NPA remains steadfast in its mandate to uphold the rule of law and ensure that those who commit serious offences are brought to justice.”
