MISA welcomes fuel levy relief extension, upset by paraffin hike

The Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) has welcomed government’s extension of the fuel levy relief.

Drivers of petrol vehicles will continue to receive relief of R3 per litre, while drivers of diesel vehicles will benefit from a discount of R3.93 cents a litre.

In March, government announced a temporary reduction in the fuel levy from April 1 to May 5.

This is in a bid to cushion the economy from steeply increasing oil prices.

In a statement, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana says the level of relief will be halved in June before it’s phased out in July.

This means from July onwards, the general fuel levy for petrol will return to R4.10 per litre, and diesel will return to R3.93 per litre.

MISA Spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says, “This is a positive step; however, it is disappointing that paraffin prices are set to rise by R5 or more per litre in May, leaving the poorest households that depend on it for cooking, heating and lighting, exposed to unbearable costs, as winter approaches.”
