Gauteng Education to provide mobile classrooms at Bovet primary

The Gauteng Education Department has promised to provide additional mobile classrooms at Bovet Primary School in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg. The announcement follows last week’s disruption by disgruntled parents due to overcrowding at the school.

MEC Lebogang Maile conducted an oversight visit at the school on Tuesday to assess the situation.

During last week’s protest, frustrated parents requested a new Tshivenda and XiTsonga school, as Bovet is currently catering to more than 2 000 learners. Maile says they have identified some solutions to ease the pressure.

“We appreciate the role that the parents are playing in working with the school in resolving the challenges. The kids are more than double what they’re supposed to be, about 2 000 which is not desirable. There’s few options that we’ve identified but by next week we will bring prefabricated classrooms just to ease the pressure.”

The school’s governing body’s Collen Kutama says the mobile classes will solve their problems.

“The problem that we’re having is now a little bit near to be over just because you’ve seen the MEC is here. For a short term project, they’re promising to give us mobile classes that I think will accommodate all the kids. As you can see,  Bovet is like two schools in one. By giving us those mobile classes, it will solve our problems.”
