Free State former Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae.
ActionSA in the Free State says it acknowledges the African National Congress’ (ANC) decision to place Free State Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae on a month long leave amid serious allegations of corruption and money laundering.
Letsoha-Mathae and her husband Lawrence Mathae, who is the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipal Speaker, are alleged to have accepted bribes to sway the tender for a lucrative road construction project worth R269 million.
Party provincial chairperson Patricia Kopane says this may appear as a step toward accountability, but it raises further concerns about selective justice and transparency.
Free State Provincial legislature speaker Mxolisi Dukwana is similarly implicated in the corruption scandal.
Kopane says these allegations demand equal scrutiny and her party calls for them to be placed on leave immediately to allow an impartial investigation.
The Provincial government has however, indicated that the premier has taken sick leave for a medical procedure.
Free State MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport Jabu Mbalula has been sworn in as the province’s acting premier.
