Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has formally instituted legal proceedings against Economic Freedom fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema, in the High Court in KuGompo City.
This follows Malema’s allegation that Mabuyane fraudulently obtained his master’s degree from Fort Hare University.
The application is seeking orders declaring Malema’s allegations false and defamatory.
Premier’s spokesperson, Sonwabo Mbananga, says the courts are the appropriate platform to resolve this matter.
“No individual, regardless of political standing, has the right to make reckless allegations and present them as fact without consequence. The premier remains committed to the rule of law and believes the courts are the appropriate platform to resolve this matter. This action is not about politics, it is about protecting the truth, upholding dignity and defending constitutional rights. The premier will not allow his name or office to be used as a target for misinformation and defamatory attacks.”
