The finish line of the Durban International Marathon which is expected to attract thousands of participants.
The Durban International Marathon expects to attract nearly 10 000 runners for its sixth edition, set to take place in May.
The race is the final marathon in the province that serves as a qualifier for the Comrades Marathon and will feature 5, 10 and 42 kilometre events.
Organiser, Steve Mkasi, says this year they expect to attract more international athletes than ever before.
“Those who win this race, they go on to become global icons. They go on to run records for their countries. So, we are excited to host them. We are excited that the runners will have a world-class race organisation experience. The Race Organising Committee, we are ready with all the systems. It’s all system go. This is one race where we showcase the best of road running organisation in the country and as well as in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.”
Meanwhile, eThekwini Deputy Mayor Zandile Myeni says the city is also focused on the potential boost to tourism and the local economy during the event. She says plans are in place to ensure the safety of runners and supporters.
“To us it is beyond sport, we are looking at the sport tourism and I also want to assure all the runners that our systems are now in place. The metro police with also other law enforcement agencies, they are working tirelessly to make it a point that everything that is going to happen will be smooth. I also want to say to the families as they are coming to support their loved ones, they must come in numbers so that they will see the beauty of this warmest city.”
