Police hunt perpetrators behind violent KuGompo protests

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola says police are following leads to bring to book those behind the violent activities that took place at KuGompo City in the Eastern Cape on Monday.

Ten vehicles owned by Ethiopian and Somalian nationals who run spaza shops were torched.

The incident stems from a march, which was held following the coronation of a Nigerian Igbo king.

Masemola says they are hot on the heels of the perpetrators.

“Damage to buildings is unnecessary, and South Africans are only allowed to protest unarmed, not in the way and the fashion that they behaved yesterday. It’s uncalled for, and those who are involved will face the full might of the law as we know who they are. We will collect them one by one so that they end up accounting for what they have done,” says Masemola.
