Andrew Chauke says corruption allegations affected him

Suspended South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions, Andrew Chauke has told the Nkabinde Enquiry in Pretoria that the latest developments regarding his career have affected his family life and those close to him.

The enquiry is probing his fitness to hold office.

This after former National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) head Advocate Shamila Batohi complained about his conduct to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Batohi accused Chauke of making irrational prosecutorial decisions.

Chauke was being questioned by the chairperson of the enquiry, Judge Bess Nkabinde.

Judge Nkabinde: “What are you saying about family? Once being accused for almost seven years, you’re in the media, you’re corrupt, you’re captured. There are these decisions … it affects everybody around me … are you that corrupt? What’s happening? And then you have to explain yourself over and over again. At times, you sit with them and then you look through their eyes, you can see that they are so much worried. But since the start of this enquiry and they hear that there is nothing about me being corrupt and all sort of things. There’s just that burden and all sort of things to me as a person,” says Chauke.
