Mabuyane condemns violent protests and looting in KuGompo

The Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane, has condemned the violence and lawlessness that punctuated the march in KuGompo City against the coronation of the Igbo Nigerian King.

Mabuyane says the provincial government notes the correspondence from the Nigerian diplomatic mission clarifying that the event was cultural in nature and not an assertion of territorial sovereignty over any part of South Africa.

Spokesperson for the Premier, Sonwaba Mbanangwa, says the Mabuyane calls on all parties to obey the laws of the country and that criminal acts will be dealt with swiftly by law enforcement agencies.

“Government will intensify engagements with relevant national departments and stakeholders to address concerns, including those relating to undocumented immigrants in a lawful and sustainable manner.”
