Businesses concerned about running costs amid looming fuel hikes

Business sectors that rely heavily on fuel in Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape are bracing for the impact of the expected price increases this week.

Indications are that it can be as much as R5 per litre for petrol and R9 per litre for diesel.

A local security company, Atlas Security, employs more than 450 staff and operates a wide network of cameras and armed response vehicles across the metro.

The company’s brand manager, Ryan Morris, says maintaining its operations depends heavily on fuel.

“The boots on the ground are what create the safest place for our clients. While we’re trying to step into technological spaces there has to be a form of response, and as for the country that we’re operating in, it’s no secret that crime is out of control. The need for private security at the moment is critical. So, once the fuel prices are hiking in the sense that they are, it’s putting us in a very difficult space because there’s very little room for us to take our foot off the gas,” says Morris.
