Five suspects are expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday in connection with the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) Senior Researcher Steven Gruzd’s kidnapping and murder.
The police arrested the suspects on Sunday following a joint operation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS), Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and community security groups.
Gauteng Police Spokesperson Tintswalo Sibeko says Gruzd disappeared on Thursday and was found lifeless two days later.
Sibeko says, “Police have opened a case of murder on Saturday, 28 March 2026. Five suspects have been arrested within the Jeppe policing precinct and are expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 30 March 2026. Investigations are ongoing.”
It is with great sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of Steven Gruzd, Head of the African Governance and Diplomacy Programme at SAIIA.
