The country’s top cop has broken his silence regarding an order to appear in court over the controversial multimillion rand police contract.
Speaking in Durban, National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola said he will cooperate with the courts and law enforcement agencies in the matter.
He has been summoned to appear in court on April 21 over his involvement in the R360m Medicare24 contract, linked to controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
At least 12 police officers have already appeared in court on charges including fraud, corruption and contravening the Public Finance Management Act.
Masemola says he has done nothing wrong.
“I have not been charged; I have been summoned to appear in court, which anyone can receive. As far as whether I have done anything wrong, no, I did not do anything wrong. I cancelled the contract and followed the proper processes. That is as far as I want to comment on the matter,” says Masemola.
