EFF Deputy President Godrich Gardee addresses the party’s 5th Central Command Team Meeting in Johannesburg on 27 March 2026.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says it will not field candidates in all wards in the country in the upcoming local government elections.
The party is holding its Central Command Team meeting in Johannesburg.
EFF Deputy President Godrich Gardee the party says it will only contest in wards where it has functional and well-established branch structures.
“If in a predominantly African village ward, the EFF membership in the organisation is not in good standing, why should we have a candidate there? We don’t have to, because once we allow that, we are going to be promoting mediocrity and that is not what is known of the EFF. However, as a matter of fact, where we are not in good standing, it doesn’t mean that we will not get votes because it is the party that is contesting.”
Last month, party Julius Malema said the EFF is gearing up for the upcoming local government elections not just to participate, but to win and govern.
Malema said one of the EFF’s key resolutions is to appoint mayoral candidates ahead of the elections and to be strategically positioned for any post-election negotiations that may arise.
