Several measures explored to alleviate SA’s water crisis: Majodina

Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina says government is exploring a range of measures to alleviate the country’s water crisis.

She elaborated on the measures while visiting the Lower Umkhomazi Water Project on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.

She says government will focus mostly on people who have no water infrastructure at home.

Majodina says national government is looking into the possibility to buy water tankers that would be used by municipalities.

Water sources that are receiving attention include boreholes, windmills, water harvesting at housing projects and extracting water from springs.

Meanwhile, Majodina expressed satisfaction with progress at the Lower Umkhomazi Scheme.

She has been briefed that the Ngwadini Dam is expected to be completed by August next year.

This scheme will supply water to the Durban Metro and the Ilembe, Ugu, Harry Gwala and Umgungundlovu Districts.
