The National Director of Public Prosecutions, Shamila Batohi says the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) will not succumb to pressure to prosecute state capture-related cases.

Bahoti was speaking at the annual lecture on Strengthening the Rule of Law in Cape Town, organised by Freedom Under Law and the Department of Journalism at Stellenbosch University.

Batohi says the NPA understands that South Africans want accountability for the alleged corruption in the State Capture-related cases.

She however says the NPA must also follow the rule of law.

“We appreciate that the public puts us under pressure but we will not succumb to pressure in the sense that we will not prosecute unless we know that we meet the standard required of reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution.”

She has highlighted the successes and setbacks suffered by the NPA.

Meanwhile, Judges Matter researcher Mbekezeli Benjamin says confidence in the judiciary and the NPA has been called into question in recent days.

Mbekezeli says the withdrawal of corruption charges against former Sports Minister Zizi Kodwa, and the subsequent decision to review it a day later, has put a spotlight on the NPA .

He says this has prompted Advocate Batohi to tablie a paper on stregnthening the rule of law.
