Tshwane Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya.
Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya has poured cold water on concerns raised that she is not in charge of the municipality’s political leadership and is controlled by the African National Congress (ANC) which has a majority in Council.
Dr Moya was elected a month ago in the position after a new power-sharing deal was secured between ActionSA, the ANC and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
Dr Moya, who reassured residents of the capital city that she is in charge of Tshwane, told SABC News reporter Patricia Visagie of her plans to restore Tshwane’s ailing finances, demonstrate ethical leadership and ensure stability in the Tshwane City Council.
Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya speaks on service delivery and other priorities
She has been at the helm of Tshwane for just over a month, and the pressure to deliver is not getting easier.
Another red flag is the tensions in the Tshwane Council, which might compromise the turnaround strategy.
The tensions are also linked to an ANC Councillor who failed to honour Council duty, prompting the opposition to call for his expulsion.
She leads a cutthroat political cohort, in an unpredictable power-sharing deal.
While Dr. Moya hopes to mark her 100th day in office with improved service delivery in Tshwane and a rapid increase in revenue collection to restore the municipality’s finances, many fear that her grand plans may fail if she is too afraid to rock the boat and possibly remain under the ANC’s thumb.
