Agricultural Economist, Thabile Nkunjana, says if the US tariffs ruling is implemented, it will certainly bring some relief to the country’s agricultural sector.
The US Supreme Court has ruled that many of President Donald Trump’s tariffs, which he imposed last year, are illegal.
The tariffs include 30% on South Africa.
Nkunjana says while the extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) may have provided some relief to the agricultural sector, many products still face high tariffs.
“The reality is that for South Africa, this will bring some serious relief, especially given the data itself. Because we saw that our exports to the US, they plummeted significantly. So, therefore, those tariffs were really beginning to put on some pressure and that we are even expecting even more for 2026. But now this kind of changes that,” says Nkunjana.
