Lusikisiki mass shooting trial within a trial postponed to Monday

The trial within a trial in the mass murder of 18 people at Lusikisiki has been adjourned until Monday by the Mthatha High Court special sitting in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape.

The six accused in the trial are facing multiple charges of murder, attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms.

Lawyer of accused number two, Aphiwe Ndende, is expected to continue with his cross examination of Sergeant Noluthando Rapita.

Rapita is the officer who went to fetch Ndende and accused number four, Bonga Hintsa, from Mbizana after their arrest in Port Shepstone on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast.

Ndende’s lawyer, Mawande Nokhwali, argued that his client and co-accused were only wearing boxer shorts when they were arrested in Port Shepstone.

He says his client has advised him that they were never read their rights.

Rapita has disputed that, saying when the accused were handed over to her, they had full clothes on, although she cannot remember exactly what they were wearing.

In her evidence in chief, Rapita said on arrival at the Lusikisiki Police Station that the accused were questioned about the murder of the 18 people in an interrogation which lasted for 20 minutes.
