Adv Maema’s testimony to be tested as cross-examination commences

The panel at the Nkabinde Enquiry will commence with the cross examination of Former North West Deputy Director for Public Prosecutions, Advocate Sello Maema after he concluded his evidence in chief  on Thursday.

The enquiry is looking into the fitness of suspended South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andrew Chauke, to hold office.

Maema was a lead prosecutor in the racketeering case involving former KZN Hawks head, Major General Johan Booysen and the Cato Manor Unit between 2008 and 2011.

The unit was accused of murdering members of taxi associations in Kwa-Maphumulo and Kwa-Dukuza and placing false evidence at crime scenes.

On Thursday, Maema told the enquiry that members of the unit were a law unto themselves, as they threatened witnesses and made the task of the prosecution team difficult.

“Any person who had anything to do with Cator Manor will tell you that anything can happen to them, so their life would be at stake. One witness was very scared when he had to consult with us because Cator Manor would make a person disappear. It was a law itself. Tey called it “skito”, they were very scared of them.”
