Minerals Council team to assist Ekapa Mine rescue trapped miners

The Minerals Council South Africa is deploying a senior management team to support Ekapa Mine in Kimberley.

This follows a mud rush incident that has left five mineworkers trapped underground.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the council says the deployed officials will focus on offering support to Ekapa management and affected families.

There is currently no communication with the trapped miners.

The mine is still battling difficult conditions to reach the shaft that is some 800 metres deep.

Speaking to SABC News in Kimberly earlier, mine management said that rescue efforts are being hampered by underground water, making it difficult to reach the miners.
