Scholar transport drivers in Limpopo march over impounded vehicles

Some scholar transport drivers have marched to the offices of the Department of Transport in Thohoyandou in Limpopo.

They say they are concerned that their vehicles are being impounded by traffic officers.

The drivers have been transporting learners in bakkies, taxis and other vehicles.

The department has been on a campaign to impound vehicles that have been operating without permits throughout the province since schools opened last month.

Calls for intervention

Meanwhile, with the State of the Nation Address just hours away, the African Scholar Governing Association (AGSA) is appealing directly to President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene in Gauteng’s embattled scholar transport crisis.

The Association says the president must urgently ensure the swift resolution of a long‑running payment dispute.

This after ASGA handed over a memorandum on Wednesday to National Treasury, demanding that it settle the outstanding debt owed by the Gauteng Department of Education to small bus operators.

Scores of transport service providers from across the province gathered outside National Treasury in Pretoria to highlight the impact of the unpaid funds.
