Carrim rises to infamy after name surfaces at Madlanga Commission

Businessman and senior African National Congress (ANC) leader in the North West, Suliman Carrim, rose to infamy after his name was mentioned at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is probing allegations of criminality, political interference and corruption in the country’s criminal justice system.

Carrim, a well-known political figure in the province, is now facing increased scrutiny after he approached the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on an urgent basis to stop the Commission from subpoenaing him to testify on Friday.

His bid, however, was unsuccessful.

KwaZulu Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says that Carrim maintains a direct communication with Matlala which involves a R360 million contract.

“Mr. Suliman Carrim maintains a direct communication with  Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and in their communication, it involves the contract that Cat Matlala has with the police service, which was a R360 million contract. I spoke about it during the press briefing. Matlala is approaching him to help him engage with the Minister in order to stop the cancellation of his contract. Carrim of course commits to do that because he has this relationship with the Minister.”

ANC North West Spokesperson, Tumelo Marupung confirms that Carrim is fully member of the ANC.

“We can confirm that comrade Carrim Suliman is a member of the ANC in good standing, is a long activist of the African National Congress and is currently a member of the regional task team in Ngaka Modiri Molema.”

The ANC in the North West has declined to comment on matters relating to the Madlanga Commission at this stage, saying it will only do so once the investigations have been completed.
