South Africa signs partnership deal with Afreximbank

South Africa has officially signed a partnership agreement with the African Export-Import Bank, commonly known as Afreximbank.

The trade finance bank is a multilateral financial institution that was established in 1993 to help drive intra and extra African trade.

The bank has announced a financial support package of 11 billion dollars or a R175 billion aimed at funding South Africa’s trade and industrial strategy.

Addressing delegates at the signing ceremony in Johannesburg, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the partnership aims to make it possible for black businesses and entrepreneurs to access capital and to participate in strategic sectors.

“The South Africa‑Afreximbank Country Programme will be operationalised with a finance package that will initially support a range of strategic projects across the trade and industrial cluster. The programme will inject capital into priority industrial projects, export diversification, infrastructure development and transformation initiatives. Today’s signing signals a deliberate, ambitious and more impactful phase in South Africa’s economic engagement with Africa and the world.”
