Former acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane at the Ad Hoc Committee
Former acting National Police Commissioner Kgomotso Phahlane has been accused of taking some of the police members to court for defamation of character after they have exposed drug dealings in the police.
That’s the testimony of three members of SAPS before the Ad Hoc Committee looking into concerns around national security.
Their names are Colonel Darius Ramolobe, Captain Edwin Malajtie and Captain Samuel Ramalepe. The three have made a joint oral submission regarding alleged wrongdoing within SAPS special drug dealings as well as irregular appointments.
Captain Samuel Ramalepe has explained, “The case, as we know, is still pending. Judge Monama found in favour of General Phahlane. We then appealed. We were assisted by Mr Vavi, assisted by Advocate Ngcukaitobi senior (counsel), and then Advocate Dali Mpofu senior (counsel). Then on the leave to appeal, we were granted leave to appeal.”
Meanwhile, the first witness that appeared before Parliament’s Ad Hoc committee on Wednesday, Pheladi Matjaola, has been accused of abusing the platform.
Matjaola has told the committee that she opened three cases of cyber bullying and harassment among others, with SAPS, but there has been no progress in the past five years. She alleges that KZN police head, Lt-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, had a hand in blocking progress on her complaints.
Members of Parliament interrogated her allegations, but Chairperson Soviet Lekganyane concluded that Matjaola wasted the committee’s time.
“You know, we are asking the witness questions as a collective. She has not been able to coherently answer questions in a satisfactory manner.”
