Nkabinde Enquiry hears there was overwhelming evidence against Cato Manor Police Unit

Retired KwaZulu-Natal Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Moipone Noko has told the Nkabinde Enquiry, that former National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Shaun Abrahams was justified in authorising a racketeering certificate against former KZN Hawks Head Major General Johan Booysen.

Booysen and members of the Cato Manor Police Unit were accused of operating as a so-called death squad, targeting suspects and planting false evidence at crime scenes after killing them.

The Enquiry is probing the fitness of South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Andrew Chauke to hold office.

Noko testified that there was overwhelming evidence against the Cato Manor Police Unit that warranted prosecution.

“Police created an impression that the deceased people were posing danger at them and had firearms according to ballistic reports most of them did not match the cartridges at the scene. None of the officers got shot at despite saying the deceased posed danger. None of them got shot at. If it was self-defence, it has bounds if you exceed the bounds of self-defence you also become the aggressor. Firearms were placed there, deceased were shot in a sitting position. 28 people can’t be killed under the same modus operandi that shows there is something wrong here.”
