The joint funeral service for three of the fourteen learners who died in the Vanderbijlpark crash at the Saul Tsotetsi sports grounds in Sebokeng in the Vaal, January 25, 2026.
The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in Gauteng says the trust relationship between parents and scholar transport operators who ferry their children to and from school has been broken.
SANTACO Gauteng chairperson Midday Mali was speaking at the joint funeral of three of the fourteen learners who died in Monday’s scholar transport crash along the Golden Highway near Vanderbijlpark, in the Vaal.
Fourteen learners perished when their scholar transport taxi collided with a truck.
Mali says no parent could have imagined that a school day could end in tragedy.
“To the families who lost their loved ones, again, I say this with a heavy heart: I’m deeply sorry. From the industry, we are deeply sorry. Words will never be enough.”
