Tackling organised crime needs new strategies: Cachalia

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia says organised crime in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape has become increasingly complex, requiring new strategies beyond traditional policing.

He was speaking in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape during the first leg of a stakeholder engagement focused on tackling crime.

These remarks come as communities in both provinces continue to bear the brunt of gang violence, extortion and organised criminal activity.

Although an Anti-Gang Unit was formed in 2019 to combat gang-related violence in the area, Cachalia says gangsters seem to be winning the war.

“The challenge with organised crime in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape is a challenge that we still need to meet. I do not believe that we are currently in a position to defeat these gangs. They are on a cleaning spree in the Western Cape, there is a similar pattern in the Eastern Cape and I really don’t think that we should be approaching this matter in a point scoring way.”
