Dondo Mogajane resigns from all Boards amid VBS graft allegations

Former Director-General of the National Treasury, Dondo Mogajane, has resigned as CEO of the Moti Group and chairperson of the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF).

The GEPF confirmed Mogajane’s resignation following months of public pressure over allegations linking him to the looting of VBS Mutual Bank.

Last week, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced that he would “deal” with “the reputational risk” posed by Mogajane at the helm of the GEPF.

Mogajane has since refuted claims that he pocketed R1 million from a bribe linked to VBS Mutual Bank.

The bank’s former Chairperson, Tshifhiwa Matodzi, alleged in a leaked affidavit that Mogajane took the bribe to help facilitate the reversal of a letter sent by the National Treasury to municipalities, encouraging them to divest their funds out of VBS.

Mogajane has maintained his innocence.

“My reputation has been put to question, currently by some false allegations that have been made…and I categorically deny any wrongdoing I don’t want to dwell on that for now. Proper processes must be followed. I fully understand the consequences of these allegations and (I am) humbly going to step down all Boards that I currently sit on.”

In a statement issued yesterday, the GEPF said its Deputy Chairperson of the Board, Eddie Kekana, will assume the role of Chairperson until further notice.
