The 2025 matric pass rate is the highest in South Africa’s history, marking a significant milestone for the basic education sector.
The national pass rate stands at 88%, an increase from last year’s 87.3%.
Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal is the highest achieving province at a 90.6% pass rate.
The Free State, the previous top performing province, is now second with an 89.3% rate.
This is how Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube broke down the provincial figures at the Mosaïek Church in Fairlands, Johannesburg.
“In ninth place, the Eastern Cape achieved a pass rate of 84.17%. In eighth place, Limpopo increased to 86.15%. In seventh place, Mpumalanga achieved a pass rate of 86.55%. In sixth place, the Northern Cape achieved a pass rate of 87.79% marking the biggest improvement of all the provinces.”
