Gwarube honours top performing learners

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube has honoured the top performing learners in the 2025 National Senior Certificate Exams.

Almost 900 000 full-time and part-time learners sat for the exams which quality assurance body Umalusi has given the thumbs up to, despite isolated incidents of group cheating.

The Basic Education Department is hosting breakfast for the high performers at the MTN Innovation Centre in Johannesburg.

Gwarube will announce the national matric results at the Mosaiek Church in Fairland on Monday evening. She has also paid tribute to the learners’ parents.

“To the parents and guardians in the room – today also belongs to you, as much as it belongs to your children. Behind every high-achieving learner is a home that made sacrifices. A home that chose discipline over comfort, encouragement over despair. You carried emotional, financial, and psychological weight so that your children could focus on learning. You pushed your own boulders—sometimes silently, sometimes exhausted, often without recognition.”
