Two held for questioning following Soweto CIT heist

Two suspects have been taken in for questioning following a cash-in-transit heist at Dobsonville Road near Meadowlands in Soweto.

It is reported that one of the vehicle the robbers were traveling in went head on with the cash vehicle which then rolled over and exploded.

Police say there were no fatalities and an undisclosed amount of money was taken. Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni says two of the vehicles that were used were reported to be hijacked in the North West and in Randfontein.

“We got a description in terms of the vehicles which were involved. It was a BMW and a Nissan. Our intelligence gathered the information. They linked up with our highway patrol and with our Gauteng air wing as well as  with the Hawks. They followed on information leading them approximately three to 5 kilometres from this crime scene in Meadowlands. Then they ultimately got the vehicles which fit the description. The BMW, which has a bullet hole of course, and has  cartridges inside the car, and the Nissan van , a double cap, hard body.”
