SACP putting itself at risk by contesting elections: Mantashe

ANC National Chairperson Gwede Mantashe says the South African Communist Party (SACP) is putting itself at risk by contesting elections independently.

He was reacting to the SACP’s decision of going it alone in the 2026 local elections.

The SACP has been saying its decision was prompted by the ANC’s refusal to reconfigure the alliance in over 22 years.

Subsequent talks to persuade the Communist Party otherwise have since failed.

Mantashe, who is also the former SACP National Chairperson, says the party is committing a big mistake by abandoning the tripartite alliance.

But SACP General-Secretary Solly Mapaila says as a former SACP leader, Mantashe should be ashamed that he has betrayed his own ideals as a communist.

He says they will not be silenced by leaders who are no longer interested in serving the people but are only interested in their selfish interests.
