Gauteng leak should not compromise integrity of matric exams: Sadtu

South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) says the matric exam leak scandal in Gauteng should not compromise the overall integrity of the examinations.

The National Investigative Task Team probing the scandal is expected to submit its preliminary report to Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube on Monday, following allegations that 26 matric candidates from seven Pretoria schools accessed leaked exam papers.

However, the report will not be made public until a final report is submitted.

The investigation has uncovered irregularities in several subjects, including English Home Language, Mathematics, and Physical Science.

Sadtu’s Nomusa Cembi says accountability is now critical to restoring public confidence.

“We appreciate the work that has been done so far, it shows that the systems that have been put in place to detect any untoward conduct during the examination process are working. We expect the department to ensure that those who have been found responsible for this are brought to book and they face the full might of the law. However, this incident should not compromise the overall integrity of the examinations.”
