Mangaung-FS Rugby Union deal deadlock sparks outcry from DA

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality says it is concerned by the failure of the municipality to finalise the agreement with the Free State Rugby Union (FSRU).

DA Councillor Dirk Kotze says the inability by the mayor to reach an agreement with the FSRU regarding the use of the Free State Stadium shows lack of leadership.

Kotze says this has resulted in Bloemfontein losing Springbok test matches and economic benefits that accompany them.

He says, “Because of this failure, Bloemfontein has lost Springbok test matches and millions in economic benefits. The DA will demand full accountability through council and formal questions. On the DA leadership, we will protect key assets like the Free State Stadium wasteful spending and grow the local economy.”

Mangaung Metro City Manager Sello More says the municipality has taken constructive steps to restore and maintain the stadium’s required category standards.

More says a formal partnership letter has been submitted to the South African Rugby (SARU), demonstrating the city’s commitment to cooperation and compliance.

He says the required stadium inspection has already been completed, confirming readiness for consideration in the upcoming SARU allocation cycle.
