Gambling has become a form of economic self-medication: Makgoba

Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town Thabo Makgoba has raised concerns about gambling in the country.

He says it accounts for 60% of the R1.5 trillion gambling industry and is trapping millions of people in a cycle of addiction.

Makgoba was delivering the 18th Christmas Eve midnight mass at St George’s Cathedral in the mother city.

Makgoba went on to say that disillusionment with government is undermining the confidence of South Africans in democracy.

“Very disturbingly, the Afrobarometer Survey found that support for an army takeover of our government has surged in just the last three years from just over a quarter of respondents in 2022 to nearly half of 49% in 2025.”
