Metro police are seen during a festive season roadblock in Gauteng.
Gauteng Traffic Police have arrested 12 motorists for reckless and negligent driving on the N1, N14 and N4 freeways.
The suspects will also face an alternative charge of exceeding the prescribed speed limit of 120 kilometers per hour on the freeway.
Gauteng Traffic Police Spokesperson Sello Maremane says a 35-year-old motorist was arrested on the N14 freeway near Olievenhoutbosch driving at a speed of 199 kilometers per hour.
“These suspects will appear in Pretoria and Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate courts on Monday. Over speeding remains the leading cause of road traffic fatalities. Therefore, motorists are warned not to exceed the prescribed speed limits. Gauteng Traffic Police will continue to conduct speed law enforcement operations in order to ensure citizens are safe.”
Yesterday, major roads leaving the province saw experiencing high traffic volumes as holiday makers were leave Gauteng to their various destinations ahead of Christmas Day.
Maremane has also urged motorists to keep a safe following distance as it is raining in most parts of the country.
MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela led high-visibility law-enforcement operations along the N1, focusing on public transport compliance and commuter safety.
These operations target unroadworthy vehicles, illegal operations, overloading, speeding and reckless driving.
