Minister of Electricity and Energy Kgosietsho Ramokgopa
Minister of Electricity and Energy Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has named seven international companies as Pre-Qualified Bidders under the First Phase of the Independent Transmission Procurement (ITP) Project.
The finalists from the list will help in the construction of a 14-000 kilometre power transmission line, as part of the country’s public-private partnership.
About 1,6 million households don’t have access to electricity. Now government is looking to work with the private sector for the rapid expansion and modernisation of the country’s transmission infrastructure.
The project is estimated to cost R440 billion over 10 years.

Ramokgopa says he’s hopeful that local companies will qualify in their bids in the next phase.
“We are happy to announce that of the 17 that they responded to, we have seven that are successful. Those are Dani power, Middle East, limited. There’s someone who brings these impeccable credentials to the fore to be examined and scrutinised in this consortium is Adani Power in Middle East. The second one is Arab corporate transmission consortium. They lead the member group to Cobra, South Africa. So, I mean, all of these will see, it’s international players.. It’s the Portuguese, it’s the Indians, it’s the Chinese, that are participating in this, it is the French, that are participating in this.”

All the pre-qualified bidders are international companies. Ramokgopa has attributed this to a stringent request for proposal, and he is hopeful of SA bids in the near future.
Eight IPP Projects that have achieved Commercial Operation Date to date in the 2025/26 financial year are now delivering electricity to the national grid.
The minister also announced four preferred companies under bid window 7 of the Renewable Energy Independent Procurement Programme that have been appointed to provide a total of 890 MW of Solar PV capacity.
The department will announce the credit guarantee vehicle as a safeguard for the private investors in March next year.
