The DA Johannesburg Year End Rally in Soweto
The Democratic Alliance in Gauteng has confirmed that its lawyers have written to the City to demand urgent answers about its agreement with trade union SAMWU.
The agreement, which the party has described as politically facilitated and misleading, commits the City to an unfunded R10 billion obligation until 2027.
The DA has also questioned the timing, given Johannesburg’s struggle to deliver basic services and its finances.
The DA’s Johannesburg Caucus leader, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, says their lawyers are still investigating the matter.
“One of the concerns we have is that SAMWU has been on the news, having press conferences talking about the R10 billion commitment facilitated agreement as if it is a confirmed and firm commitment that is a done deal already. This is committing the city to money that it does not have. If this is the case, then there must be a forensic investigation, but first, we have asked our lawyers to get that information for us, failing which obviously we will weigh our legal options as well.” – Reporting by Ntombi Sithubi
