Police Commissioner to meet Judge Madlanga after Witness D’s killing

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola will soon meet with the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference, and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System’s chairperson, retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga.

This follows the killing of Witness D, Marius van der Merwe, in Brakpan, east of Johannesburg, on Friday evening.

He had implicated suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi in a murder cover-up, following the killing of a man whose body was thrown into a dam in 2022.

National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says Masemola will brief Justice Madlanga on the safety of witnesses.

“The National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola is going to be briefing Justice Madlanga, and they will have a conversation on what has transpired and I’m sure the safety and security of everyone that will be appearing or has already appeared before the commission will take centre stage. So let’s not speculate.”

Meanwhile, Gauteng Deputy Police Commissioner Fred Kekana says it is unfortunate that Van der Merwe was killed before he could shed more light on a murder incident.

Kekana says the death of Van der Merwe is a missing piece in their investigation.
