Van der Merwe declined witness protection: Kubayi

Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says Marius van der Merwe (Witness D) was offered witness protection, but he declined.

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry witness was shot dead in Brakpan, east of Johannesburg, on Friday night.

His identity was erroneously revealed, including the failure to disguise his voice during his testimony a few weeks ago.

The reporting surrounding his killing has highlighted public concern about the safety of the commission’s whistleblowers and witnesses.

A manhunt is underway for Van der Merwe’s killers.

Addressing the media in Pretoria, Kubayi said: “I do want to say after this development, I did interact with Advocate Khumalo, who is responsible for the security of the Commission of inquiry. He did indicate to me that Mr Van Der Merwe was offered protection, which he declined because he didn’t think that he needed it and because he runs his own security company.” – Reporting by Ntombi Sithubi
