Mchunu presents evidence of human rights abuses by disbanded PKTT

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has requested the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry to hear the testimony of eight complainants who have raised concerns about the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

On Thursday, Mchunu submitted a confidential list of eight names, which he testified were the basis for his decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team.

Mchunu says the complainants have raised issues of human rights abuses and violations from members of the PKTT.

But Mchunu told Commissioner Khumalo SC that he did not cite the complaints in his disbandment letter.

Mchunu has also testified at the Commission that the similarity of his disbandment letter and that of KwaZulu-Natal-based researcher Mary de Haas was purely coincidental.

De Haas wrote to Mchunu in October 2024, raising concerns about human rights abuses by PKTT members.

She further alleged that the PKTT was irregularly constituted. Mchunu told Commissioner Khumalo that he didn’t necessarily consider De Haas’ letter when disbanding the PKTT in December 2024.

Commissioner Khumalo: So, the similarity between the language used in this letter and your disbandment letter, purely coincidental?

Minister Mchunu: Purely coincidental. I didn’t memorise anything.

Commissioner Khumalo: You didn’t have it with you when you wrote your disbandment letter?

Minister Mchunu: No, no, no.
