Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is expected to return to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria on Friday morning.
On Thursday, he struggled to defend his decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) in KwaZulu-Natal.
Mchunu faced intense cross-examination from the commission’s Chairperson, retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga.
Many witnesses have accused Mchunu of not consulting stakeholders before ordering the disbandment of the task team.
Mchunu, who has been placed on leave of absence, has explained what he meant when he said that the PKTT should be disbanded immediately.
He testified that the term immediately cannot be read alone but needs to be read together with a directive he gave to National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola.
Mchunu says that he first wanted General Masemola to go and prepare a preliminary report on the PKTT and secondly convene a meeting with Deputy Ministers and the top executive so they may consider the decision he has taken.
