ANC-SACP alliance at crossroads after SACP’s election bid: Mbalula

The Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC), Fikile Mbalula, says the alliance with the South African Communist Party (SACP) is at a crossroads.

Addressing delegates at the 16th ANC Greater Johannesburg Regional Conference in Sandton, Mbalula confirms that the SACP has resolved to contest the upcoming local government elections independently.

Earlier this week, ANC Gauteng chairperson Panyaza Lesufi urged members not to allow the alliance to collapse.

Mbalula warns that the SACP’s decision will have serious implications for both local and national elections.

“When the party contests on its own, that means communists who used to be with us in the trenches are now going to be distinctly on the other side. We do not know what they will be campaigning on. We said that this is not good for the party, but we couldn’t find each other. The communists have started campaigning in different by-elections. Comrades, I’m reporting to you that we have failed to agree that the party must revisit that resolution.”

Mbalula says that the party can still win if it can remain strong and active.

The Secretary General states that in order for the party to perform good, they need to start hiring people who are qualified.
