The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has reiterated its call for a full forensic investigation to be conducted into tender fraud and corruption in all hospitals in the province.
This follows large-scale looting uncovered at the Tembisa Hospital by the Special Investigations Unit, estimated at over R2 billion.
DA Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga says South Africans have seen only a fraction of the full extent of the fraud.
“We are asking a number of things. One, we are asking for a full on forensic investigation to happen, not just in Tembisa, but across a number of hospitals, of what has happened in Charlotte Maxeke, what has happened to Kalafong Hospital and all these hospitals that we have here in Gauteng. But over and above that, we want to know how many Maumelas have benefited from the cries and deaths of so many people around Gauteng and we want to know how many officials have been held accountable. Babita Deokaran could not have died in vain.”

Meanwhile, Hawks Sergeant Papie Tsie and Tembisa Hospital official Zacharia Chisele have since been granted bail of R5 000 each by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.
Both accused are facing charges of corruption after they allegedly attempted to bribe a Hawks officer working on the ongoing investigations at the hospital.
They were arrested last week after paying a bribe of R100 000 to the investigating officer, who had planned to arrest them as soon as the transaction was completed.
The case has been postponed to February 27 next year for further investigations. – Reporting by Culvin Mabasa and Sashin Naidoo.
