Thousands arrested SAPS during Safer Festive Season operations


The South African Police Service has arrested 16,000 suspects nationwide during intensified Safer Festive Season operations, including one 178 for rape and one 143 for murder, between November 17 and 23.

Police also seized 150 unlicensed firearms, 984 dangerous weapons, and contraband goods worth over R4 million.

Major takedowns included hijacked trucks, counterfeit goods, and suspects involved in armed robberies and abalone poaching.

The SAPS has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as the festive season approaches.

SAPS Spokesperson Vincent Mukhathi, says, “The SAPS continue to register commendable progress in the fight against crime through its nationwide safer festive season operation, running alongside Operation Shanela 2 to ensure safety and security ahead of the festive season. These intensified police operations carried out between 17 and 23 November 2025 and led to the arrest of 16,066 suspects across the country.”
